Defending Trademarks & Business Reputations

Beard St. Clair had the opportunity to represent a major Idaho potato grower and processor in a trade libel litigation matter. The matter resulted in an $11.2 million verdict in favor of our client, the largest defamation verdict in Idaho history and one of the largest overall verdicts ever in the state of Idaho.

A former business partner accused our client of conspiring with the Idaho Potato Commission to deprive the partner of its license to use the “Grown in Idaho” trademark and of attempting to steal its customers.  These accusations were published in local, national, and trade publications throughout the United States, including the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and the Packer. The case involved depositions and discovery literally nationwide and touched on significant areas of federal agricultural law, the potato industry, and the importance of agricultural trademarks and business reputations.
